Building Beats with Apple Logic Pro X

Logic Pro X offers a lot of features, for example to Building Beats, Making tones etc. The so-called “editing” of audio regions usually takes place after recording or even while arranging a song. The processing of audio regions is an essential part of the production process and is the focus of this part of the workshop.

Setting up the project – preparation is half the battle

Let’s start by setting up our project: By default, drum samplers come with pre-built drum kits. These are compilations of individual drum samples, which offer everything from bass drum, snare drum, hi-hat to crash cymbals and percussion instruments to create a complete groove.

The pen tool – how do I become a musical Picasso?

Now let’s start with your first beat! You don’t need a MIDI keyboard or a drum controller, just the virtual pen tool from Logic, mouse and keyboard, as we will simply draw in the MIDI notes.

Wait a minute – what exactly do MIDI notes do? MIDI data is control information for controlling electronic instruments, i.e. sound generators such as synthesizers or samplers. In our case, a drum sampler is “controlled” or triggered by playing a MIDI note, which then plays a sample that is in the form of an audio file, e.g. B. in WAV or MP3 format on your hard drive.

And already we have the basic rhythm on which many dance songs are based. Of course we can’t let this musical masterpiece run through for three minutes in a row – even in a minimal techno club, tired faces would appear. So it is time to build variations from our basic rhythm. To do this, we duplicate our MIDI region and expand it.

The drum section is now there, but what happens next? Since drawing in MIDI notes doesn’t only work with drum samples, we can now program other virtual instruments.

Even without in-depth knowledge of music theory, you can program instruments harmoniously in Logic X. I decided to continue with this style of music with a synth bass. Here you will now get to know the brush tool.

This is exactly how it works with every other virtual instrument and for many musical styles. Just try it! Over time you will develop your own approaches, shape your own sound and thus form your signature as a beat producer.

The use of MIDI keyboards or drum controllers naturally brings more liveliness and “realness” to a production through the live recording. However, this requires at least a certain amount of sense of rhythm.
