Exam: Study plan and Important Tips

When it comes to the Board Exams or the competitive exams such as NEET, CET, or JEE Mains and Advance, class 11 chemistry is important to secure high marks and score high rank. Class 11 Chemistry has concepts of organic chemistry that form a base for the class 12 organic chemistry. There are advanced reactions and equations in class 12 that require the knowledge of IUPAC Nomenclature, basic reactions, and catalytic reactions. All the students need to have a good understanding of the concepts taught in class 11 Chemistry. There are three divisions in Chemistry – Physical, Organic, and Inorganic chemistry. From the class 11 chemistry chapters, approximately 50% of the questions appear in the competitive exams of medical and engineering entrance exams. Most of the students seem to have a good handle on the physical and inorganic chemistry, but when it comes to the Organic part, they find it complex as many reactions with different names confuse them.

Study Plan:

A lot of students do not understand which chapter to learn first and which of the chapters need more focus and attention. However, the students must need to know the marking scheme or the blueprint. Based on the weightage of the marks, the student can pick the important chapters and prepare better for them.

Below mentioned are the distribution of marks for class 11 chemistry

  • Unit 1 and 2: Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry and Structure of The Atom – 11 marks
  • Unit 3: Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties – 4 marks
  • Unit 4, 5, 6, and 7: Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, States of Matter, Chemical Thermodynamics, and Equilibrium – 21 marks
  • Unit 8, 9, 10, and 11: Redox Reactions, Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, and p-Block Elements – 16 marks
  • Unit 12, 13, and 15: Organic Chemistry: Basic Principles, Hydrocarbons, and Environmental Chemistry – 18 marks

After observing the distribution of the marks, the students can design themselves a study plan that focuses on the major topics and can get you more marks.

Important topics from each division of Chemistry:

Physical Chemistry: A lot of students tend to like Physical Chemistry as they think that there is less theory and more numerical to solve. There is less memorizing and more understanding of the application of theoretical concepts. However, until and unless you have a grasp on the theory topics of this division, you will not be able to solve the given numerical problems. This division includes chapters such as Structure of the Atom, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, and States of Matter. Most of the numerical problems are asked from these important chapters. One of the most important chapters from the chemistry subject is Chemical Bonding and Structure. This is an easy chapter but it has numerous topics keeping in mind the board as well as competitive exams.

Organic Chemistry: This division of chemistry requires a lot of focus and understanding as it functions as a base for the Chemistry of class 12. The chapters that are included in organic chemistry are Organic Chemistry: Basic Principles and Hydrocarbons. These two chapters are very important. You can learn the basic principles and techniques. These include the IUPAC and general nomenclature of the organic compounds. These also include the effects that contribute to the performance of the organic compounds such as isomerism, resonance, Inductive effect, Conjugation. You can learn how to prepare alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes using different methods. Overall, it is a very interesting subject if learned with focus and attention. It can turn out easy if you learn the behaviour of the reactions and the formation of equations.

Inorganic Chemistry: Inorganic chemistry requires you to grasp a large amount of knowledge as there are properties, names, terms, and behaviours of the elements that need to be memorized. The chapters that are included in this division are Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties, Redox Reactions, Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, and p-Block Elements. In these chapters, you can learn different types of the periodic table, their merits, and demerits. These also include the behaviour of the elements that are included in the s and p block of the periodic table.

Tips to Study and Score High in Chemistry Exam

Stick with NCERT: NCERT is the best and only book that is enough for the preparation for the Board exam. It has all the topics covered and questions in between and at the end of the chapter. The language is simple and easy to understand. An Exemplar Book is also provided that can be used to solve numerous problems based on the specific chapter. NCERT Class 11 chemistry pdf solutions or textbooks are available online. Solve all the questions and read the textbook thoroughly to secure high marks.

Solve Previous Year’s Question Papers and Sample Papers: Your preparation for the exam is incomplete if you do not practice the previous year’s question papers. In this way, you can understand the pattern of the question paper, the marking scheme, level of difficulty and can get an idea of what topics to concentrate on.

Time Management: After preparing for your exam, put yourself on a 3-hour timer and solve a question paper completely. Analyze your performance and see where you stand. If you are stuck on a particular question, do not pressurize yourself. Move on to the next question. Manage time according to the allotted marks for the specific question.

Write Adequate Answers: Most of the students do not provide adequate answers to the question. For example, for 5-mark questions, the students write three to four lines only. They do not even provide a neat labelled diagram if required.

Make a List of Formulae and Important terms: Studies have proven that students who learn and write tend to remember better than those who don’t. Make a list of all formulae needed to solve the numerical problems and the important definition or terms that might be asked.
